don't put my hand next to you
[There's really nothing special about the date or anything else today, as far as Ed is concerned - it's just a reasonably sunny afternoon after a spate of showers, which makes it as opportune a time as any to go pick up a few supplies.
And why is he knocking on this door before he heads off to do just that (and it is knocking, not hammering)? Well, it wasn't too far out of the way.
She's probably not even in, right? Probably off with her friends, doing... well, who knows what she might be doing on a day when even a sane person would have a legitimate excuse to randomly break into song, provided they were about five years old? Heh, she's hopeless.]

...Sorry.

...Me too. Sorry.

[There, he's reclaimed some of his self-perception.]

[Clearly, she feels either better enough to tease him, or that teasing him will make her feel better. She even nudges him a little with a forehoof to make the teasing all the more clear.]

[And now they're on their way to the shops he actually said he was planning to drop by.]
no subject
[The... awkwardly obvious answer escapes her.]
no subject
...Nope. [He sounds slightly hoarse.] Beats me. Hey, are those the kind of brushes you were looking for? [He points.]
no subject
[Luckily, diversion successful!] Well... they'll do. I can't find exactly the right brush, because this isn't PonyvED! If I told you how to make a mane brush would you transmute one from a normal brush for me?!
[She can't believe she didn't think of this before and it has her so excited she's practically springing through the air.]

Hey Ed, speaking of, why do you always wear a braid?

[Hey Ed, the pony has been giving consideration to your personal appearance. What are your feelings on this?]

[Rainbow, with her style, doesn't have in-the-way problems, but then again, her mane is attached to her NECK as well. Of course, he's never seen her with her mane really fancied up either; he might be surprised how long it actually is.]

[Then he goes back to trying to herd her indoors. He's got stuff he wants to buy at some point too.]
no subject
[Ha ha, herd. She's going along with him, smiling still; the awkwardness from before is completely forgotten. Once they get inside, she offers a friendly wave to the proprietor before zipping over to the brush section, examining the selections with a keen eye.]
Anything that'll make it easier for you I should look for?
no subject
[Hanging back a little, he casts an eye over the shelf as he absently starts untying his braid. ... Does he look like a hairbrush expert?!]
But they all look about the same to me.

[She scoops two brushes off the shelf, not one to delay and dither after all, and heads for the register.]
