[Finally, he releases his grip on Souji's shirt.
And makes a grab for his wrist instead, trying to pull him towards the bushes.]

[Is it even a guy? Eh, he's getting rid of it here, so there's no way that could possibly matter.
The orange cat, for what it's worth, seems unimpressed both by Souji's offering and by Yosuke's idea of a tactical manoeuvre. But unimpressed isn't the same as wary, and it just locks eyes with Souji rather than retreating back into the leaves, even though there's ample room for it under there; now that they're close up, it's easy to see how skinny it is.]

[He takes this time to look at Yosuke in the eyes instead. You can't just leave him with the cat!]
Yosuke, you can't just leave it here...did it follow you before or just this morning?

[Meanwhile, the cat slinks out from under the bush and, pointedly ignoring Souji, drapes itself over Yosuke's shoes.
He looks down at it and groans.] Sheesh... It must've been outside all night too, but I didn't think it'd try to follow me inside...

[He hands his partner the treat.]

[Difficult for Yosuke, that is. The cat seems perfectly comfortable, and in fact appears to be dozing off despite the brisk weather today.]

[The cat opens one eye when Souji tries to approach it again. It looks disgruntled.]
That's not the point! The point is I can't just keep every wild animal that shows up on my doorstep! Come on, man...!

I've never seen an animal follow you to your doorstep. [Pause.] Teddie doesn't count. [This cat would not turn human, he's pretty sure.] It looks like it hasn't been fed for a while...stay here for a minute.
[Wait Yu that's the exact opposite of what Yosuke asked you to do! And he's ignoring Yosuke if he calls out to him as he runs off really quick, only to return a few minutes later with slices of fresh tuna.]

[He's not giving it to the cat, he's attempting to give it to Yosuke so his partner can feed the cat.]

[But he's already gone.
By the time he returns, Yosuke has managed to dislodge his feet long enough to drag them over to a nearby wall and lean against it rather than keep standing next to a random bush like an idiot. He has not managed to dislodge the cat, which is now gently butting its head against his shin.]
Uh, okay... [Distracted, he takes the fish - and immediately drops it.] I mean, no! Do it yourself! It's not my cat!
[But he's apparently good enough for the cat, which pounces on the fallen tuna so enthusiastically it narrowly misses getting caught on the cord of Yosuke's headphones and promptly begins to wolf the food down.]
... Whoa, look at him go.

It probably hasn't had a decent meal in a long while. I haven't seen a cat around Inaba this thin before...and the way it's reacting to me probably means it hasn't had much human contact before. [That or he was losing his touch...]
Cats have personalities, just like us. If it's accepted you, it may not want anyone else close to it.

Polishing off the tuna in record time, the cat settles back down on the pavement and nonchalantly starts to wash its face. The sight of it makes it a little difficult to stay frustrated...]

[Being Japan, there are no real animal shelters either, not that Yu would know from this internal monologue.]
Maybe we could build it a shelter somewhere? [But he's late right now, isn't he.] Let me try to see if it wants me and we can figure it out when you're done with work.
[He slowly tries to approach the cat. Maybe when its feed it will be more cooperative? ]

Meanwhile, Yosuke rubs agitatedly at his own forehead.] I wasn't thinking that far ahead... Look, it's obviously a stray, right? So it'll be fine! I just... I can't just let it follow me wherever it wants, can I?

[He only meant to gesture down at it, but his fingers brush lightly against the cat's slightly ragged orange ears, which immediately prick up - oh god, it's staring at him. What does it want now?]

When Yosuke's accidental brushing leads to a reaction, Yu looks down at the cat, then back at his best friend. It's pretty cute, and he can hear the faint sound of purring.]
Try petting it behind the ears, Yosuke. [Maybe the cat itself will slowly win him over.]

[But Yosuke was never much good at staring contests. Presently, he relents just long enough to bend down and give the cat a hesitant little scritch behind the ears.
... It's like bumping against a volume dial. Or else like accidentally switching on a tiny orange lawnmower.]

[Something that has always bothered him about cats in general. But oh my goodness! This one was very vocal. The minute Yosuke starts to pet it behind the ears, Yu stares in silence after that, to see what Yosuke will do. You can't have a heart of coal after that, partner.]
