ACE ATTORNEY MEME

Objection! It's an Ace Attorney meme!

There could be witty flavour text here, but tbh you know how it goes.

PROMPTS

Prologue

1-1: PRELUDE. Whoever and wherever you were, you're now a benighted lawyer, and you've finally got a day off to chill with your chirpy underage girl buddies. Will you head out to the burger place? Noodle cart? Theme park? A more upmarket social gathering, courtesy of a frilly friend or two? Or stay in to clean the toilet? No matter what, you'll certainly have to pay out of your own pocket -- but relax, what else could go wrong?
1-2: JINGLE. While you're having a good time, you spy a quirky character acting quirkily! Who could it be? Do they have anything to hide? Do you have enough time to flash your attorney's badge at them before they can escape the conversation? Whoever they are, they'll surely never be relevant to your life again.
1-3: SUSPENSE. Holy crap, was that a gunshot? A scream? An ominous booming over the PA? A guitar bursting into flames? Good thing you and/or your trusty assistant are on the case! And even if you didn't want to be, that person over there looks like they're about to talk you into it...
1-4: ELEGY. Oh no, someone was murdered, and a hapless-looking acquaintance of yours has taken the fall! Only one thing to do -- head straight to the Detention Center and get the rundown yourself. Unless, of course, a plot hook is about to stop you. (On second thoughts, did they actually do it? Nah, couldn't be.)

Investigation

2-1: OPENING. If you don't know where to start, the crime scene is as good a place as any. Just watch your step -- tripping over a police detective may make them less inclined to blurt out exactly the right confidential information you need. Or more, depending on who it is.
2-2: MIDDLE. Whoa, this sure is a suspicious scene. Better go over it with a fine-toothed comb and steal make a note of any evidence that seems worth throwing onto the pile before somebody shows up to stop you. Wait, are you already a bit late?
2-3: ECCENTRIC. You're pretty sure this person is concealing something vital, but too bad for you, they're more interested in spouting flavor text, showing off their most outlandish animations or simply running away before they get to the good part. You could wait and see if they turn up in court, but have you asked all the questions you can think of yet? Maybe you just need to present the right thing to loosen their tongue? Hey, could be third time lucky with that badge of yours, right?
2-4: PSYCHE-LOCK. Uh oh, they've definitely got something to hide, and they're not at all willing to give it up. Time to break out that trusty Magatama and start pointing some fingers. Watch your health meter, though...
2-5: REMINISCENCE. You're all out of leads. It seems like you've got no choice but consult with your reliable old mentor. What do you mean, they died two games ago? You'll just have to find another -- or maybe you won't, if your sidekick has anything to say about it. Just be careful not to get too tangled up in desaturated flashbacks -- the clock is ticking, and your client's life is on the line!
2-6: CORE. The critical piece of evidence was right there, but oh shit, they've got a taser! And a mafia hit squad! And a door that you just can't break down! And a stepladder! And an evil laugh! What are you going to do?!

Trial

3-1: COURTROOM LOUNGE. Welp, the day is here. Calm those nerves, review that Court Record, talk to your client one last time, and do your best to stay away from the fire extinguisher.
3-2: COURT BEGINS. The defense is as ready as it's ever going to be, Your Honor. But who's that behind the bench opposite, and why on earth do they look so smug? This doesn't bode well...
3-3: MODERATO. Before you can do anything, you need a thorough understanding of the case, and it's not like anyone bothered to show you the autopsy report in advance. Warm up those Chords of Steel and hammer that detective's testimony for all they're worth. Let's just hope you don't end up in an even worse position than you were to begin with.
3-4: ALLEGRO. The prosecution has brought in their trump card, be they an eyewitness or something more, and it doesn't look good -- but if your client is innocent, there has to be a crack or two in that flawless-sounding testimony, and your cross-examination will find it. Here goes nothing!

Turnabout

4-1: LOGIC AND TRICK. The pieces are falling into place. You think you're beginning to see the way out. Still, you need to make sure everyone else in the courtroom can see it your way, so check those diagrams once more and bring on the explanations. You've got nothing to lose! Apart from a few penalties and possibly the case, but no pressure.
4-2: PURSUIT. A verbal slip-up? A detail that shouldn't be there? An unexplained shift in mood? A copious amount of armpit sweat? (Ew, let's hope not.) Your rival and the judge might be convinced it's irrelevant, but you know better, and you're going to bring the real story of this case to light. Bluff it until it comes out on its own. Same difference.
4-3: REVIVAL. The music stopped, but it was a trap! Now your opponent is on the offensive, and the gallery is on their side! How are you going to talk your way out of this one? Think fast, and watch the judge's gavel!
4-3: OBJECTION. The truth is so close you can almost taste it, but though you can see that they're on the verge of giving it all up, your foe is a tenacious one. Is it possible you've been thinking about the case in the wrong way this whole time? What about that one minor piece of evidence you've been sitting on since day 1? Can you hold out long enough for your off-screen ally to save the day? You're almost there -- turn this courtroom around!
4-4: CAUGHT. You've broken them. It's finally over. Cue the tears, the exposition, and even the sympathy. Your client's safe, and you've done it. Haven't you?
4-5: VICTORY. All right! Brush the confetti out of your ridiculous hair, you've got some celebrating to do! No hard feelings among the weird and wonderful people you've gotten to know over these past few days, eh? Of course, it may turn out that the real case is only just unfolding...

Whatever

I-1: SERIOUSLY, WHATEVER. AUs, OUs, parrots, go wild!

[As Tsukasa spoke with Yuusuke, Apollo was at the crime scene, the Hikari Photo Studio. Natsumi was also there, similarly searching for evidence even though Apollo could see how much it pained her to face her grandfather's murder like this. He could understand her feelings...perhaps a little too well. Nevertheless, they had a small, somewhat awkward chat about Yuusuke. It was relieving to hear that Natsumi was similarly unable to believe Yuusuke's guilt, even clearly emotionally affected by Yuusuke's apology...but at the same time, both she and Apollo could see from the evidence at the scene that so far, Yuusuke was the only possible culprit.

But Apollo wasn't about to let that stop him. There had to be something they were missing...right?

Perhaps he could find it through Yuusuke's testimony, which he could hopefully receive now that it's been some time. With a better grasp on the situation and some clues at hand, Apollo returns to the detention center to speak with his friend again. To his mild surprise, the guard says he's already ready to see; someone else was just visiting him. A particular prosecutor, in fact. (Now that bit of information isn't surprising at all.)]

Yuusuke? I'm back. I talked to Natsumi and got some evide... (Huh?)

[Apollo notices the photographs as he approaches the chair on his side of the glass. What are these...? Photos of the crime scene, but terrible quality..... Only one person could have shot these.

Whatever Yuusuke's first words are, they'll hit Apollo a few second late as he's distracted by the photographs, which he's now picking up to look at more closely.]
protectedsmile: (that's got to be repainted)

[personal profile] protectedsmile 2014-09-03 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
[The pictures were obviously trying to be crime scene photos, except they lacked the professional clearness, and a few had oddly superimposed images or blurred in places. Like one of the images was of Yusuke holding the murder weapon, with his clothes drenched in Eijiro's blood, yet there was a blurry image of Yusuke clearly in shock with no blood or weapon in hand.

Another picture was of the entire crime scene, however somehow or another there's a superimposed image covered it, showing how it looked before Yusuke entered the scene.

Meanwhile, Yusuke didn't notice the photographs in Apollo's hands right away.]

Apollo, you're back. Natsumi, how...how was she-

[He stopped, finally noticing the pictures. He's trying not to show the worry on his face, before hesitantly asking.]

Are...those the crime scene photos...?
apolling: (do not say this is how it has to be)

[personal profile] apolling 2014-09-03 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
(These are...!)

[Despite their signature blurry quality, Apollo can tell these photos are from the crime scene - and not just that, but also the time of the murder. And if that's the case, then this is the lucky break that he's been searching for...potentially. Can he trust them? And if he can, will the court even accept such poorly shot images as evidence?

Not to mention the implications such photos have for the person who took them...

Before he can wonder too much, however, Yuusuke's voice reminds him of where he actually is right now. (Oops.) Apollo's eyes shoot back up to his friend, and he gives a semi-apologetic look.]

...Yeah. They were just sitting here. [He almost holds them up to the glass for Yuusuke to see, but decides against it at the last second. Maybe not a good idea just yet.] Natsumi's looking for evidence for you right now. No need to worry about her.

[...] Did...Prosecutor Kadoya visit you just now?

Evidence?

[Natsumi was looking for evidence for him? There's a frown on his face, as he gazed back down again, clearly conflicted. What sort of evidence could they find?

Now he was worried. What if there was some small piece of evidence that could lead to Tsukasa? He was absolutely certain Tsukasa was innocent, but what if there wasn't enough evidence to clear his name?

He was lost in his own worry, that Apollo's question caught him by surprise. He's looking up, blinking a few times before frowning.]

He...he did. He's going to be the Prosecution for this trial and...

[Yusuke's shifting his gaze away again.]

Why do you ask?
apolling: (knowing things should change)

[personal profile] apolling 2014-09-04 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[Apollo's not too surprised to see Yuusuke react negatively to his news. It strengthens his growing theory, in fact...but he won't mention that to Yuusuke until he's a little more sure that he's correct - and that involves the use of his bracelet when the time comes.

For now, he has something else to ponder about.]

(He's really going to take this case, after everything? I thought he was on Yuusuke's side, at least...) [But maybe he still is? He wouldn't just forget these photos of the crime scene, would he? (Assuming these photos are even legitimate, which, again, has implications.)

He's not really sure what to think. Prosecutor Kadoya is an enigma, and it's always been hard to tell whether he is an ally or an enemy. It's pretty frustrating, really, but at least Apollo has experience with dealing with fickle prosecutors like that...

But enough of letting his mind wander off and ignore the matter at hand. Eventually, Apollo shakes his head and makes eye contact with Yuusuke again.]

It's just...I thought he might be on our side, after what he did for Ms. Yashiro. But I guess not after all.
protectedsmile: (To be strong and powerful...)

[personal profile] protectedsmile 2014-09-05 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
[Yusuke was at a loss on how to respond. On one hand, he knew Tsukasa was determined to clear Yusuke and his own name. On another Yusuke was afraid of accidentally turning attention towards the prosecuting attorney.

He slowly shook his head in response.]

...he's just doing what he thinks is right. Tsukasa... ...Prosecutor Kadoya has to have a good reason for taking this case.

[He doesn't admit the fact Tsukasa told him to not worry. Still, all of it was nagging Yusuke on the inside.]

...I'm sorry. Was...was there anything else you wanted to talk to me about...?
apolling: (do not say this is how it has to be)

[personal profile] apolling 2014-09-05 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
(Turning against you when you're charged for murder is 'right'?) [...But Apollo (perhaps smartly) refrains from saying that out loud. Prosecutor Kadoya's reasons for taking this case do interest him - and he makes a mental note to talk to the prosecutor later if possible - but they're not the focus right now. There are more important things to discuss with Yuusuke first.]

(...If he'll talk this time.) [Apollo feels rather unsure that he will...but he has to try. If it means not hearing it for the first time in court tomorrow, then he'll try his best.]

Yeah, there is. I still need to hear your account of what happened at the time of the murder.
protectedsmile: (Let go the accelerator)

[personal profile] protectedsmile 2014-09-05 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
My account...?

[The realization hits him. He still had to do this the next day in court. He hadn't thought of what to say, and knew if he made a lousy lie Apollo would easily pick it apart.

Hesitantly Yusuke looked up to Apollo. All he could think about was seeing a horrified Tsukasa and Eijiro on the ground. That clearly torn look on the prosecutor's face as he shook the old man, begging for him to wake up. Yet...it was too late.

Biting down on his lower lip, Yusuke lowered his head. How could this happen to them? Who would do such a thing, and for what reason?]

That night... I went to see Natsumi. She invited me over for coffee but when I got to the Hikari Studios, there was only Eijiro with no signs of anyone else.

[He's gripping at the fabric of his jeans now, trying hard not to think of all the blood he saw on the floor. Or how Tsukasa's desperate cries rang in his ears still.]

He had a knife left out on the coffee table, I think it was to cut the cake he baked that night. ...I took it and...

[He fell silent, before quietly adding.]

That's when I stabbed him. I killed him, Apollo.
apolling: (it's gone to hell and they wonder how)

[personal profile] apolling 2014-09-06 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[There it is. The first contradiction appears within Yuusuke's first few sentences. When Apollo had spoken to her earlier, Natsumi had never mentioned inviting Yuusuke over for anything, and he doubts she would just forget that.

But before he can press that statement, Yuusuke continues on, and the attorney's eyes briefly fall to his hands. It still doesn't make any sense to him. He won't deny that he's made plenty of errors of judgment in people before, but he...he doesn't want to believe Yuusuke would kill someone for no reason. Especially not a friend.

Softly spoken, Apollo's only question so far is the same one that has gone unanswered all day.]

...Why? Why would you do that, Yuusuke?

[He stares closely at his friend, while his hand subconsciously finds itself resting on his bracelet.]
protectedsmile: (To be strong and powerful...)

[personal profile] protectedsmile 2014-09-07 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
["Why?" That was the million dollar question of the day. Yusuke wished he knew why, himself.

Why would anyone do that to Eijiro? Who would set Tsukasa up to look like the murderer? He closed his eyes, slowly shaking his head. As calmly as he possibly could, Yusuke spoke quietly.]

Isn't that your job to find out why, Apollo?

[He looked back up, while putting on his best guarded look. While in the back of his mind he hoped that Apollo would find the truth. He had to. Both he and Tsukasa could do it, he was sure of it but right now it just hurt having to lie to his friend like he was now.]

...I'm sorry but that's all I can say.
apolling: (we can bend and we can break)

[personal profile] apolling 2014-09-08 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
(Why else do you think I'm asking, Yuusuke?) [Sigh... Apollo probably should have seen that response coming. He can't even use his bracelet to help him right now when it didn't have a reaction. So he'll have to change directions here...]

...In that case, I want to question something else. You said Natsumi invited you for coffee on the night of the murder, correct?

[If he can't get explanations or subtle tics, at least he can get contradictions.]
protectedsmile: (No dreaded thing ever does exist)

[personal profile] protectedsmile 2014-09-08 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...I did.

[He looked up over to Apollo, wondering just where he was going with this line of questioning. He's tilting his head a bit looking a little confused. Although he decided against asking Apollo, 'why' for the time being.]

I remember getting a message...
apolling: (I will not be afraid to fight)

[personal profile] apolling 2014-09-08 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Are you sure? Because Natsumi didn't say anything about an invitation when I talked to her. She had no idea you were coming over at all that night.

What was this message you received?
protectedsmile: (Gonna get over the top!)

[personal profile] protectedsmile 2014-09-08 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Really? She didn't?

[From the look on his face, Yusuke's genuinely surprised.]

...I actually got a text about spending time with Natsumi over some coffee and catching up, since we've been busy with work for a few weeks. The message should still be on my phone.
apolling: (do not say this is how it has to be)

[personal profile] apolling 2014-09-08 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
[There it is, one thing he can use to start proving Yuusuke innocent! (Hopefully...depending on a few lucky factors.)]

Who sent the message? Was it Natsumi herself?
protectedsmile: (No dreaded thing ever does exist)

[personal profile] protectedsmile 2014-09-08 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Huh...? Well, no...

[He's crossing his arms frowning. Now that he thought about it, he really didn't question getting that message from Tsukasa instead of Natsumi.]

It was Prosecutor Kadoya.
apolling: (it's gone to hell and they wonder how)

[personal profile] apolling 2014-09-08 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
(Prosecutor Kadoya?)

[Uh oh. Between this and the odd crime scene photos, Apollo suddenly has a bad feeling about this. He tries not to let it show, but there's a bit of uncertainty in his expression regardless.]

When was the last time you saw Prosecutor Kadoya before he came to visit you just now?
protectedsmile: (Let go the accelerator)

[personal profile] protectedsmile 2014-09-08 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
[Yusuke noticed that look on Apollo's face, causing him to mirror it. Was he thinking badly of Tsukasa right now? Shifting his gaze away from Apollo, Yusuke continued to speak.]

I...did meet him earlier when I decided to do some research over at the Law Library that morning. We talked a bit, and he took a picture of me with this pink camera he's been carrying around lately.
apolling: (do not say this is how it has to be)

[personal profile] apolling 2014-09-08 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[Apollo might say that taking a photo of Yuusuke is weird considering the crime scene photos, but if he knows anything about Prosecutor Kadoya, it's his enjoyment of taking terrible pictures of...just about anyone, really. So he probably can't use that as any unusual connection between the photo taken in the morning and the photos taken at the crime scene. Though speaking of which...]

And you're sure you didn't see him at all after that?

[He's already got those photos on standby if Yuusuke claims he's sure.]
protectedsmile: (Let go the accelerator)

[personal profile] protectedsmile 2014-09-08 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yusuke knew he had to tread carefully with that question. He knew Apollo could easily poke holes into his statement if he wasn't. Slowly he shook his head.]

I was supposed to, but like I said when I got to the studio it had just been Eijiro and myself.

[He's completely oblivious to the fact the photos in Apollo's hands might say otherwise.]
apolling: (there is no evil that will stand)

[personal profile] apolling 2014-09-11 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yuusuke. Lying to me isn't going to help either of us.

[Apollo holds the photos up to the glass for his client to see, making sure to hold them like a hand of cards so that each one is visible.]

These pictures of the crime scene were left behind by Prosecutor Kadoya just now. Even if his...style of taking pictures wasn't obvious, I'm sure there's a way to prove these came from his camera. Now how could he take these if he wasn't there at the time of the murder?!
protectedsmile: (Let go the accelerator)

[personal profile] protectedsmile 2014-09-12 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Yusuke grew frigid. Apollo knew. On top of that Tsukasa had left pictures behind. Was it on purpose? Or did he forget them?

No, this was Tsukasa. He couldn't have forgotten them, not when lately he's been showing him his pictures and about them every chance he had. The fact Tsukasa had left them here, meant he had faith in Apollo's abilities too.

Yusuke hesitates a little before speaking quietly.]

I...I didn't notice he was there at first.

[It was another lie. He knew it, but he still didn't want Apollo to think badly about Tsukasa.]

The reason he decided to take today's case was because...because he was there too. He knows what happened last night. Apollo, I...

[...]

Please talk to Tsuka..... ...Prosecutor Kadoya. I know him better than anyone. I know he'd help you!
apolling: (do not say this is how it has to be)

[personal profile] apolling 2014-09-17 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Finally, some truth, and a reason to lower the photographs from Yuusuke's view. But there are more than a few problems that Apollo has with this new piece of information.]

He saw you do what you claim you did?

[Or is he lying? Or if he saw something different, why isn't he telling anyone? Not to mention, why is he choosing to prosecute Yuusuke if the latter is the case? To take a fall for him? Or is it...

Well, it's only a hunch, anyway. Apollo recalls a somewhat similar case from Mr. Wright's past. But he won't jump to that conclusion unless he gets more proof. Before then...he agrees internally that talking to Prosecutor Kadoya is probably a good idea, assuming he's cooperative. (A prosecutor being cooperative...that would be the day.)]
protectedsmile: (To be strong and powerful...)

[personal profile] protectedsmile 2014-09-18 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
That's...

[Yusuke looked away, while gripping at the fabric of his pants. It was getting harder to lie in Apollo's face. Not when he just wanted the other to go and discover teh truth of the situation.]

...what you should ask him for yourself, Apollo. He couldn't even face me that night.

[Granted that was all because he kept staring at Eijiro, shocked and clearly upset. He hadn't noticed Yusuke until he had grabbed his shoulders and said something.]
apolling: (knowing things should change)

[personal profile] apolling 2014-09-18 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
(You're really not going to make this easy for me, are you?) [But alright, fine, he gets the hint.]

I'll ask him. But before I do, I have another question for you. Natsumi said there was a framed photo missing from the studio hallway. It was last seen yesterday afternoon. Do you know anything about that, or why it would go missing after the murder?
