[What's unique to Sans is the immediacy of his attacks. Chara has seen countless timelines come and go, has seen the patterns woven into each encounter, can pinpoint the exact timing of every speech these characters give. But this skeleton-- his fighting style demanded focus. It demanded their attention and, most importantly, all of their power. They recognize the moment the blue bleeds out behind Sans.
They're in for a good time.
When the bones fall, Chara lurches back. This is different from their past battles with him-- no blue souls, no bones from the ground. With startling quickness, Chara tries to create distance, aiming to duck somewhere where the bonefall is thinnest.
Wait it out. Keep moving. Sans can't keep these bones falling forever. And when he stops--]
[- is when, with a finally familiar flare of piercing blue, he hurls their soul sideways into the bone-studded dirt.
...
Not quite effortless, that lurch. Not yet perfectly honed.]
Yeah, I change up the routine sometimes... You don't mind, right?
[From whack-a-mole to darts. Gotta throw in some variety! Gotta deliver on his word to the thing that followed him all this way just so the game wouldn't have to end.
...He's still not sure how that happened, if he's honest. The playing field is different here, that much is self-evident. There's a lot more than the whims of a single human going on in this bizarre, troubled world. For a start, he no longer has nothing to lose.
Maybe that's why he's already breathing heavily. But his hand holds steady beneath the smoke wrapping around his skull, and the unnatural weight against Chara's side only presses harder as it does.]
[Something new, something that hurts. Chara doesn't expect it. It's apparent by the way their eyes widen, how a small bark of pain leaves them as they bounce on the dirt like a ball. Pressure squeezes against them, like a wrench tightening around a clamp, and for a second they feel almost human. It's hard to breathe like this. Their fingers claw at the ground, leaving deep gauges.
It's pain they haven't felt before from Sans. Their shoulders are shaking, tears and sweat are trailing down their face. Demon or no, their body was flesh and blood. Mortal. And this hurt enough to be debilitating.
Yet, if Sans looks closely, it doesn't seem as though Chara is still trying to get up. Their head snaps up, eyes feverish mouth bared in a hideous grin.]
Is this... y-your only new trick...?
[Their normally soft voice wavers, mouth stuttering as their host's brain tries to work through the strain. Something is going to break. Maybe a rib. Maybe--most likely--more. But it can't be denied:
no subject
